The route of the Andean civilization: Caral, Sechin and Chavin de Huantar

Explore the most ancient and important archeological sites in Peru from the coast to the high Andes. In this trip we will visit: the oldest known city in the Americas, which was built over 5000 years ago; a great archeological site with over 300 figures that date to over 3500 years ago carved on its rock walls; a huge stone structure that was a center of the pre-Inca world and still retains its elaborately carved stone deity, which stands 4,54m in height and dates to over 2700 years ago; and an Inca fortress that was constructed upon their conquest of the Chimu civilization in approximately the year 1470.

Acclimatization

Given that this trip proceeds in a progressive manner from sea level to its highest point, there is no need for previous acclimatization.

Hotels

These are the hotels we will be staying in on this trip: Hotel Bay View in Lima, Las Poncianas in Casma and the Hotel Morales in Huaraz. In the event that there is no availability, we will change for other of the same category.

Equipment list

We recommend that you bring lightweight clothes, warm clothes and a rain jacket.

Climate

The climate on the first three days of the tour is warm with temperatures between 17 and 26 °C. In the high country (Huaraz and Chavin) the temperature varies between 16.6°C in the day and 12.6°C at night.

The best season to visit is between April and October.

Is this trip appropriate for me?

There are no restrictions for this tour as it involves only travel by car and climbs gradually from sea level to 3700m.

Day 1: Arrival in Lima

Airport pickup and transportation to hotel

Introductory meeting in the hotel with an overview of the trip

Day 2: Lima – Caral – Paramonga – Casma

At the appropriate hour you will be picked up at your hotel in Lima and brought by private vehicle to the city of Barranca where we will visit Caral, the cradle of civilization in the Americas. After lunch we continue on our journey to the Paramonga fortress and then we will we continue to the city of Casma for the night.

Day 3: Casma – Cañón del Pato – Huaraz

After breakfast we will visit the Sechin archeological complex and then the Max Hule Regional Museum. After visiting these two sites we head north to Chimbote and then turn up into the mountains via Cañón del Pato and then along the Huaylas Valley to the city of Huaraz. En route we will make a stop in the Cañón del Pato to see the Central Hidroeléctrica (a hydroelectric power plant), pass through 35 tunnels, and visit the towns of Caraz, Yungay, Carhuaz, etc., all in the shadow of the glaciated peaks of the Cordillera Blanca. We arrive in Huaraz in the afternoon.

Día 4: Huaraz, Cordilllera Blanca viewpoint and city tour

In the morning after breakfast we will drive up to Wilkacocha at 3700m, which provides a spectacular panoramic view of the majestic Cordillera Blanca and afterwards we descend back to Huaraz to visit the Ancash Regional Museum, where we can appreciate various artifacts from the various cultures that once existed in the Cordillera Blanca region. The afternoon is free.

Day 5: Huaraz – Chavin de Huantar

After breakfast we board the bus with the Callejon de Conchucos as our destination. En route we will briefly stop at lake Querococha and then pass through Kawish tunnel before descending to the Chavin de Huantar archeological complex. After our visit we will have lunch and then return to the city of Huaraz.

Day 6: Huaraz – Lima

In the morning after breakfast we will head to the bus terminal and begin an eight-hour journey back to the city where we began our adventure. That afternoon, upon arrival at the Lima bus station, we will be picked up and brought to the hotel.

Day 7: Lima – back to your point of origin or on to the next tour

At the appropriate time you will be picked up at the hotel and brought to the airport or the bus terminal.
